Description
IMR 8208 XBR
Marketed in the USA as IMR 8208 XBR, this near-ideal medium-speed propellant has undergone extensive testing by Hodgdon USA’s ballistic technicians and leading handloading writers, with consistently excellent results.
Burn Rate and Suitability
Benchmark 8208 has a burn rate that falls between ADI’s Benchmark 2 and AR 2206H, placing it firmly in the ideal range for competitive and sporting applications involving .223 and .308, particularly with light- to medium-weight bullets.
Benchrest competitors using cartridges such as 6mmBR and 6mmXC, along with sporting shooters loading .22-250 with lighter bullets, 6.8 SPC, and .204 Ruger, can all make good use of this versatile propellant.
Metering
BM 8208 is a fine-grained propellant. Available reports do not clearly indicate whether it is single- or double-base, although pressure and velocity data suggest that it is most likely single-base.
Metering tests have demonstrated excellent consistency when charges are thrown, making BM 8208 particularly well suited to high-volume handloaders and helping reduce time spent at the loading bench.
Load Density
Depending on the cartridge and application, the fine granule size of BM 8208 typically results in loading densities of approximately 70–90 percent.
Shooting Results
Hodgdon’s testing has shown that, with minimal load development, sub-MOA five-shot groups are commonly achievable
